A development of artist studios in Aldeburgh has been shortlisted for a prestigious building award, making it four projects shortlisted in five years for Framlingham based Robert Norman Construction.
The building contractor worked closely with SOUP Architects on the project, named ‘The Studios’, which has been revealed as one of only 16 projects from the East of England chosen to battle it out for the annual Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Award.
Regional winners will be put forward for the RIBA National Awards, with the lucky recipients announced in June. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the 2015 RIBA Stirling Prize.
A building situated in Palgrave called ‘Stackyard’ is the only other Suffolk based building to make the list.
On the shortlisting Robert Norman said: “We are very proud to be one of a fantastic list of projects shortlisted for the award. Credit must go to SOUP Architects who designed The Studios, which we were able to make a reality.”
Robert Norman Construction won this prestigious award last year, again in conjunction with SOUP, for Broombank, a domestic build also in Aldeburgh. Projects shortlisted for the award in previous years include Bavent House and Long Farm.
‘The Studios’ are two new multi-use artist studios built within a mature landscaped garden on an existing residential plot. The twinned studios are located remotely from the main house and configured to create a tranquil, contemplative space in the garden.
The building is constructed from a thermally efficient timber and steel framed construction. Internally the Studios are finished with robust painted chipboard linings and externally with corrugated fibre cement board.
Low energy consumption is achieved through the use of a high level of insulation and the incorporation of electrical panel heaters that are only in operation when the buildings are in use. All rainwater is diverted into to the existing balance pond.
Robert Norman Construction is a multi award winning building contractor specialising in high quality, major commercial works as well as new homes, eco-houses, and the sustainable construction of beautiful barn conversions.
