The Studios wins RIBA Design Award

A development of artist studios in Aldeburgh has been selected as a winner of the prestigious RIBA East design award.

The project named ‘The Studios’ was designed by SOUP Architects and built by Framlingham based Robert Norman Construction. It now goes forward as one of 8 projects from the East to battle it out for the annual Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Award.

The project is the 4th project in 5 years from the  local contractor to make it this far and on the win Construction Director, Bob Page said: “We are very proud to be one of a fantastic list of projects chosen as an East winner. Credit must go to SOUP Architects who designed The Studios, which we were to bring to life.”

The RIBA National Awards will be announced in June. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the 2015 RIBA Stirling Prize.

A building situated in Palgrave called ‘Stackyard’ is the only other Suffolk based building to be put forward into the national prize.

Robert Norman Construction in conjunction with SOUP won an East design award in 2014 for Broombank, a domestic build also in Aldeburgh. Projects shortlisted for the award in previous years include Bavent House designed by Hudson Architects and Long Farm designed by Lucy Marston Architects.

'The Studios’ are two new multi-use artist studios built within a mature landscaped garden on an existing residential plot. The twinned studios are located remotely from the main house and configured to create a tranquil, contemplative space in the garden.

The building is constructed from a thermally efficient timber and steel framed construction. Internally the Studios are finished with  simply but to a very high standard and externally with corrugated fibre cement board.

Low energy consumption is achieved through the use of a high level of insulation and the incorporation of electrical panel heaters that are only in operation when the buildings are in use. All rainwater is diverted into to the existing pond.

Robert Norman Construction is a multi award winning building contractor specialising in high quality, commercial works as well as new homes, eco-houses, and sustainable construction.
